How Often Should You Get Light Therapy for Maximum Benefits?

Light therapy has become increasingly popular in recent years, and many people wonder how often they should get it for maximum benefits.

What is Light Therapy?

There are several types of light therapy, including red, blue and green light therapy. Each type of therapy targets specific conditions, and the wavelengths of light used determines the depth of penetration into the skin.

How Often Should You Get Light Therapy?

The recommended frequency of light therapy sessions may vary depending on the condition being treated, the severity of the condition and the individual’s response to treatment. Some people may need more frequent sessions to achieve the desired results, while others require fewer sessions.

Generally, to achieve maximum benefits, it is recommended to start with two to three sessions per week, each lasting 10-30 minutes. After a few weeks, the frequency can be reduced to one to two sessions per week and then gradually to once a week or bi-weekly.

Skin Conditions

For skin conditions like acne, rosacea and psoriasis, it is recommended to start with two to three sessions per week for four to six weeks. After this initial period, the frequency can be reduced to once a week or bi-weekly, depending on the severity of the condition.

Sleep Disorders

For sleep disorders such as insomnia, it is recommended to use light therapy in the morning for 30 minutes to an hour. This can be done daily or every other day, depending on the individual’s response to treatment.

SAD

For seasonal affective disorder (SAD), it is recommended to use light therapy in the morning for 30 minutes to an hour, starting in the fall and continuing through the winter months. The frequency can be reduced in the spring and summer months.
