The Importance of Hydration in the Summertime

Summer is a great time when most people can relax and enjoy the sun’s warmth. However, it is also a time when staying hydrated is extremely important. Dehydration can lead to various health problems; in severe cases, it can even be life-threatening. When temperatures rise across California, your body sweats more, which is the body’s natural way of cooling down. However, this also means losing more fluids, which can lead to dehydration.

How to Stay Hydrated

What can you do to stay hydrated in the summer? The most obvious solution is to drink plenty of water. Experts recommend drinking at least eight glasses of water daily, but you may need more in the summer. If you are spending time outdoors, especially if you are exercising or doing strenuous activities, you will need to drink more water to compensate for the fluids you are losing through sweat. You can also eat foods that are high in water content, such as fruits and vegetables. Watermelon, cucumbers and strawberries are all excellent choices. At AuraSpa, we offer several Drip IV Therapies to help reverse the effects of dehydration and return your body to a healthy, hydrated state. The IV process usually takes about an hour, and the different nutrient infusions help to revitalize you. You can choose from vitamin infusion, fat burners, hangover recovery, fitness, beauty, detox therapies and more.

What Are the Signs of Dehydration?

It is important to recognize the signs of dehydration and take action if you start to feel unwell. If you experience the following symptoms, get to a shady place and drink some water:

  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Dark urine
  • Fatigue

If you start to feel dizzy, lightheaded or nauseous, you may be experiencing heat exhaustion, and you should seek medical attention immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.

How Can I Avoid Dehydration?

It is also critical to take steps to avoid dehydration in the summertime. Avoid sugary drinks, such as soda and juice, as these can increase your dehydration risk. You should also limit your intake of alcohol, which can dehydrate you even further. Choose to snack on foods that are high in water content and avoid salty snacks like chips or pretzels. A proper diet adds a significant amount of water to your system. If you are spending time outdoors, try to stay in the shade as much as possible, wear loose, light-colored clothing and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. Staying hydrated is crucial in the summertime. With the right precautions, you can enjoy the warm weather without risking your health.
